While most hard core armchair racing fans in Canada will be glued to the television and internet to watch some fellow Canadians in action at the Rolex 24 at Daytona,  that is not the only iconic international racing event taking place this weekend.

Tomorrow morning marks the start of the 87th Rallye Monte Carlo, which was first held in 1911 and featured routes all over Europe, finishing in Monaco.

Prince Edward County resident, Ian Crerar will be competing in the Monte Carlo for the second time, in the WRC R-GT class, at the wheel of a Porsche 911 which is sporting a spectacular Canadian livery.

A true privateer entry, Crerar’s rally car is a former street car with 300,000 km on the odometer, which has had all the safety modifications done to meet the stringent FIA rules.

A regular competitor in Canadian regional racing and rallying, Crerar’s has taken part in several European rallies, most recently in the 2018 WRC Corsica with this same 911.

Racing is a family affair for Crerar, whose Wife, Michelle Laframboise is also an active rallyist and road racer, having won the Rebelle Rally in 2018 and son Cameron also races.

The family team is Clearwater Design Racing, an offshoot of the successful kayak company they operate.

Primarily a tarmac event, The Monte is the first round of the annual WRC calendar and is known for offering up a treacherous mix of dry pavement, glare ice and snow and so far the 2019 event is living up to its reputation. The roads today are snow covering sheer ice and one recce stage was cancelled when two cars went off at the same spot, blocking the road.
